Learning to fly is an exciting experience that will leave you not only with a great sense of achievement but also a licence to a whole new world.

Gaining your private pilot’s licence can be done in as little as three months or completed over a longer period of time ie 12-18 months. It is totally your decision and can be scheduled to fit both your time and budget. This is the first step to take if you choose to proceed toward your Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL).

Shine Aviation Service’s flight school is ideally located. Due to the good weather conditions we experience in Geraldton and the uncluttered air space in our region our students’ flight time is rarely interrupted. Less holding time on the tarmac means our students gain more time in the air and greater value for money.

We recommend you begin by booking a trial introductory flight with us. This is a hands-on no obligation introduction covering the basics of piloting an aircraft and will allow you to decide whether or not flying is for you.

During a trial introductory flight you will sit in the pilot’s seat while you taxi the aeroplane to the runway.

Perform your first takeoff by yourself while the instructor talks you through the process. Then sit back and enjoy the view of Geraldton as you have full control of the aeroplane, before experiencing the thrill of landing as you attempt it for the first time. Gift certificates are an ideal present for those who have always wanted to fly.

From there the basic steps involved in gaining your private pilots licence are:

Begin by receiving theory and practical lessons from one of our qualified flying instructors on the principles and basic manoeuvres of flying an aeroplane
Learn enough skills for your instructor to send you aloft for your first solo flight which will be your first and most memorable goal. To prepare you for your first solo flight you will be given extensive ground instructions briefings before each lesson.
Gain a minimum of 22 hours dual flight and 8 hours solo flight to be assessed as being capable of carrying passengers on local flights. (Now you can demonstrate your newly acquired skills to family and friends).
Pass the General Flying Progress Test (GFPT).
Receive a further minimum of 28 hours of navigation training enabling you to be proficient enough to take an aircraft, yourself and passengers to any destination in Australia. During this time you will fly north, south and east of Geraldton to teach you the necessary navigation skills.
Be awarded your unrestricted Private Pilot’s Licence.

The theory content of a Pilot's Licence covers the Rules of the Air, basic aeronautical knowledge, meteorology and navigation. There is no requirement to have achieved a high academic level at school to pass these tests.

As long as you’re over sixteen, age is no barrier to gaining your pilot’s licence.

All Shine Aviation Services flight training is done in our Cessna 150 two seater and Cessna 172 four seater aircraft which are ideal for our area. Both aeroplanes are also available for private hire (at an economical rate) after you have obtained your licence.

Trial Introductory Flight:

One Passenger $140 for 30 minutes

$250 for one hour

Prior to commencing your training it is recommended that you have a aviation medical and complete an application for the Student Pilot License (SPL) and ASIC (Aviation Security Identification Card). This is due to delays of up to 6 weeks in CASA processing your application. You will also be required to purchase a Student Pilot Kit at a cost of $190.00.
